Individualism vs Group
- Liberals: basic social unit is individual, person is distinct from social group
- Radicals: basic social unit is group, person is socially constructed, active and critical embrace of group
Idealism vs Materialism
- Liberals: attitudes are sources and solutions for oppression, thinking as prime mover of social life, rational argument/education is engine of social change
- Radical: concrete systems of power as sources/solutions of oppression, thoughts are constituent participants in conditions, organized political resistance compels social change
Naturalism vs Constructivism
- Liberals: body originates independently of society/mind, gender/race as physical body
- Radicals: reality is social down to the somatic level, gender/race are socially real categories, but biology is ideology
Voluntarism vs Social Determinism
- Liberals: social life is comprised of autonomous, intentional, self-willed actions
- Radicals: social life is comprised of a complex political determinism, the oppressed do not make or control conditions, but “with forms of power forged from powerlessness, conditions are resisted”.
Moralism vs Feminist Jurisprudence
- Liberals: rightness means conforming behavior to rules that are abstractly right or wrong
- Radicals: such precepts systematically work in the interests of power, while powerlessness is the problem, redistribution of power as currently defined is not in its ultimate solution
I used to be a liberal, but now I’m a radical.
Well put!!! ‘Radical’ here is perhaps a less useful way of saying structuralist.
On that note, liberal feminists often distinguish themselves in public discussions on women’s rights by making comments which don’t go beyond themselves and their individual sex lives. Embarrassing when others are attempting to use the discussion to discuss the needs and conditions of women generally.
